Basics on Handling Cheating and Plagiarism
Have an AI policy in the class syllabus.
Understand default AI rules for GW.
- A student submitting AI work as their own with no citation or disclosure is generally prohibited.
- See the GenAI Guidelines (PDF) from the Office of the Provost, Default Rules.
- See most of GW’s relevant AI policies.
There is no definitive way to understand whether someone used AI on a piece of work.
- GW Libraries Teaching with Generative AI guidance suggests avoidance of AI detection tools. Additional GenAI Guidance (PDF) from the Provost suggests we use our “human skills” to protect against plagiarism and cheating.
- Strategies you might employ:
- Ask the student to explain the work.
- Compare the assignment in question to the student’s past work or other students’ work.
- Ask a GW-approved chatbot to do the assignment and compare the output to the student’s output.
- Review with SafeAssign.
